Health Tourism The province of West Azerbaijan covers an area of 43,660 km² including Lake Urmia that covers 2.65 percent of the total area of I.R. Iran, and the province consists of 17 cities. Located in northwest of the country, West Azerbaijan has plenty of fascinating tourist attractions, natural beauties, and archeological sites to offer such as Lake Urmia, Takht-e Soleiman, Tappeh Hasanloo, Saint Tateous Church (Ghare Kelisa). Having Borders with 3 foreign countries such as Turkey, Iraq and Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the province has another distinct geographical characteristics. Visitors from all over the world travel to WA to enjoy its pleasant climate, archaeological treasures and distinct landscape. Hence, the province has the opportunity to develop and to boost tourism ties and tourism industry with the mentioned neighbors. Urmia University of Medical Sciences as a type 1 university is highly prosperous, and it is one of the leading medical schools of the country that benefits from professional doctors, clinics, and modern infrastructure in various medical fields with international standards. Due to offering safe, knowledge-based medical treatment and reasonable prices, there are a large number of health tourists. There are 314 faculty members, and 7 faculties namely, International Branch, Medicine, Pharmacy, Paramedical, Health, Nursing, and Dental in Urmia University of Medical sciences. There are 30 public and private medical centers possessing various modern medical equipments such as nuclear medicine, MRI, CT scan, etc. Imam Khomeini Hospital is the first and the most important center in renal transplantation in northwest of Iran. Plenty of patients from all the neighboring countries, especially Iraq Kurdistan, refer to the medical centers of Urmia University of Medical Sciences daily.
